As we arrive at the beginning of finals week, it’s usually appropriate to take some time to reflect. It’s been quite a semester, and Butler Club Esports is ready to wrap up the fall of 2019. We were able to achieve so much! Below we’ve collected some highlights.
Call of Duty – With the fall 2019 release of Modern Warfare, Butler’s Call of Duty squad was inactive this semester, but will be returning to the Collegiate CoD League in the spring of 2020!
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Butler was unfortunately not able to support a CS:GO team in the fall of 2019, and the current Collegiate Star League season continues into the spring of 2020 as well. But with enough interested players, we may to be able to find a different league to compete in next semester!
Fortnite – Our four-member squad this semester was the first ever to compete for Butler University! They competed as one team in the fall Collegiate Star League season, placing #2 in their region and qualifying for playoffs – an amazing debut season! These playoff matches have yet to be announced, but we will keep you posted about when and how to watch!
Edit: We just got word from CSL that the playoffs will take place after the first of the year, as most schools now are beginning winter break. So the conclusion of the fall season will be in January!
Hearthstone – Butler fielded three Tespa Hearthstone teams this semester – our most ever. Delta and Lambda both finished the regular season 1-6, while Hearthstone Gamma advanced with a 5-3 record to the regional playoffs, finishing 25th out of 146 teams in the North region!
League of Legends – Butler’s Premier League of Legends team participated in a pre-BIG EAST season tournament and placed in the top 16. Our club squad, Challengers, is currently in the middle of the Collegiate Star League regular season, which is currently on its mid-season break. Currently the Challengers are 2-4 and will play five more matches in January and February.
Overwatch – This year, Butler had two Overwatch teams which competed in the Tespa Overwatch Preseason. Blue finished 7-13, with White coming in at 4-14. Butler will field one large team in the Tespa regular season next semester!
Rainbow Six: Siege – Butler’s Rainbow Six team made a repeat appearance in the Collegiate R6 league. An unfortunately winless season won’t count out the Bulldogs, though, as they will return again for more in the spring!
Rocket League – Our Rocket League A team made a strong showing in an attempt to qualify for the fall 2019 CRL season, but wasn’t quite able to get there this year. They are currently mid-season in the Collegiate Star League, sitting at 4-2 with six spring matches yet to come. Rocket League B, our club team, participated in CSL as well, and is 0-5, looking ahead to seven more weekly matches in 2020.
Smash Bros. – Butler’s newly-organized Smash Bros. Ultimate community spent a great semester working and practicing together! One notable performance came from Nick Lewis, who ranked 191 out of more than 1,000 participants in Battlefy’s November Online Open!
BIG EAST Teams – Our BIG EAST League of Legends team participated in the BIG EAST Fall Preseason presented by ESL, and after round-robin play finished with a 2-5 record. As League of Legends looks ahead to the spring regular season, BIG EAST Rocket League wraps up an incredible fall BIG EAST season presented by EGF, finishing 4-0 in the regular season and going into playoffs as the #1 seed and defending BIG EAST champion, where they finished tied for third in Butler’s first-ever LAN playoff in New York City.
Additionally, no semester summary is complete without mentioning our club events. In November, we held our second annual Extra Life 24-Hour Charity Stream in the new Lacy School of Business, raising $1,205 for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis and the Children’s Miracle Network of hospitals. We also ratified a new Constitution to reflect our brand-new transition into the club sports space here at Butler, and we elected Hunter Newman as our new Safety Officer to serve during the spring semester of 2020.
